Food Bank: Soroptimist of Laramie decided to do an ongoing community service project for the 2009-10 year. With the economy in the state it’s in members decided to support the local food bank, Interfaith Good Samaritan. Twice monthly, at both our business and program meetings members bring non-perishable food items as well as paper products that we donate to help our local community and those in need. We feel this is a good way to promote our mission of helping women and children and to do it throughout the entire year.
Christmas Family: Once again our club voted to adopt a family for Christmas. We were given a family of six; a mother and five children. There is such a good feeling about being able to make a special Christmas for someone in need. A single mother with five children has got to be a challenge in so many ways and it warms the heart to know we can bring some joy to the entire family. The mother says she doesn’t need anything, just for the kids. Isn’t that the sentiment of so many unselfish mothers? I just wish we could be there on Christmas morning to see the joy on their faces.
Christmas Caroling & SocialWe will be spreading some Christmas cheer this year as we gather on December 17 and make our rounds to the Laramie Care Center, Regency Retirement Residence, Springwind Assisted Living Community, Ivinson Home for Ladies and Ivinson Memorial Hospital singing Christmas carols. After we conclude with our singing we will gather to spend a little time with our Soroptimst sisters for some Christmas fun.
Safe House VigilIn October we provided refreshments to the Safe House Vigil as they have a community wide event that requires many volunteers to be successful. Once again our mission of improving lives of women and children falls right in step with Safe and their caring and sharing.
Loving Our EnvironmentSoroptimist of Laramie has adopted a stretch of the Greenbelt in West Laramie. At least once each spring and fall we gather to pick up trash and help maintain the wonderful area many of us enjoy as we walk, run or bike in the great outdoors.
